I've had Lingo for years now; been a very reliable service, except for their London virtual number which never worked well. Signed up with Vonage, ran their service in parallel with Lingo. Vonage had problems: you would dial a number and it wouldn't ring... and calls would come in straight to voicemail. I will get around to cancelling them eventually.

I use Lingo, and although I have had some disruptions, here and there, especially after an electric storm, I am not complaining. Compared to what I was paying for less service, it is excellent.

Yes I gotta love Vonage. Very cheap and all the cool features are free. Also good tech support.

I tried cancelling Vonage after 6 mos and they tried to offer me all kinds of deals to stay. Even after switching to comcast I still received Von bills and they said Only I can cancel my account but it would cost $30 and my account would be overdrawn so I told them to postpone it til I called them to cancel. I called Comcast and they called Vonage and they canceled my account immediately. Then I got a Vonage bill for $130 taken from my band for a modem I was not allowed to return. When I told the supervisor only I can cancel my account, he said the other supervisor was wrong and he would review my case and call me in 5 days. After no phone call, I went to arbitration, which promised to assign a person to help me shortly and my dispute will be resolved in 30 days. Nobody was assigned to me and 30 days later I have heard nothing and my account has still been charged $130, Vonage totally sucks.

I have had vonage since April of 2005. I have to say that I have had very little trouble with their actual service that they provide. I have had an occasion when I have had to call customer service and that seems to be a joke; however I have had maybe 1 or 2 outages since joining them. I have notice this year that I have had sound quality issues that I never had before. I have 8mb/sec intenet speed, so I know its not my internet speed. I am not sure if the poor quality is becuase of their current situation, but if it doesn't improve soon I will probably leave within the next month or so. I would caution anyone with a TIVO series 2/3 or a security system. They are somtimes not compatiable with all VOIP and you should make sure that the VOIP provider has a high enough packet size to carry the signals. I tried packet 8; however their service packets were to small and could not carry my security system signals to the alarm company. Comcast and Mediacom are not much better, but you must think of these things before making any mores from traditional phone service to VOIP.

Vonage and good customer service? I spend 5 hours on and off the phone with them JUST to change out a bad phone for a Vonage/Linksys router. The language barrior was dismal at best. I'm with Vonage because I'm with Vonage, not because I like them.

I've used Vonage for a year and the only thing I can say is that their service is awful. Dropped and not clear calls. All problems disappeared when I switched to UNIATELECOM. Great customer service, clear calls. It is a new company with A++ customer service. My Office benefited from dropping Vonage, so should anyone of you, check them out at http://www.uniatelecom.com

went to the Unia Telecom site. good Connecticut VOIP phone service provider. Great alternative to Vonage or SunRocket! Apparently, they have a cap on subscribers they're willing to service. According to the CSR I spoke with, no more than 5K users at any given time. Said they want to ensure preservation of quality service delivery by not having too many subscribers. Surely makes sense. Definitely signing up now...... G.

Try Teliax.com Teliax offers several plans and is very flexible. Teliax is a complete VOIP service solution. Plans start at $4.99 per month.

I have had voip.com service for several months now. I have had a few small issues with the service, but when I called 1800TRYVOIP for technical support, the problem was resolved quickly and there was no problem getting through to a person. Sometimes people have different experiences with different service providers. Sometimes it might just be bad timing. I would strongly recommend voip.com. They have great service and lower rates than any other compnay I have seen so far. My yearly plan comes to about 16.95 per month for unlimited calls.

i was with vonage..switched to sunrocket, then to gradwell.. now ive finally found the right service. http://www.connexin.co.uk they have a great service with very helpful staff.. highly recommend them

Vonage has been sort of ok but I cant fax to half the phone numbers I've tried - hit or miss - faxing out is critical. Faxing in can be handled with a free service like K7.com

About Voip.com... This was a decent company about 6 months ago but has been going downhill ever since. Customer service has been poor and they don't honor their rebates nor refunds. I've missed many calls because they get the message "this number not working." I have cable internet and had no problems when I had SunRocket (which I loved). Anyway, I wouldn't recommend them and there are other, better, voip providers you haven't listed. Why not?

Ive had Voice Eclipse for about 2 years. The price is good--24.00 a month for 2 lines. The service was good except I never liked the sound quality--(everyone else told me it was fine) BUT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE WORST. IVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY PHONE FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS NOW AND CANNOT GET TO TALK TO ANYONE. THEY KEEP U ON HOLD FOR 20 MIN THEN TELL YOU TO LEAVE A MESSAGE AND THEY NEVER CALL. I EVEN E-MAILED THE VP OF TECHNICAL DEPT AND STILL NO RESPONSE---THAT IS WHY I AM LOOKING FOR A NEW CO. RIGHT NOW

I would like to make a comment on 2 of the providers. Packet 8 Customer service started out pretty good but has gone down hill. They lie, and do not assist you. If you open a case it takes a month or more for them to respond. It takes 30 minutes or more to talk to someone and sometimes you still never do. VONAGE, I am currently trying to change from Packet 8 to Vonage, come to find out, there is no way to email vonage, They also lie and tell you they will call you back and don't. 2 DAY shipping to them takes 4 days yet you pay the price... AND, they are working with call centers in INDIA. So it seems so far they all suck, and are the same.. Any suggestions? Maybe we should start a site like the Comcast must die sight.

Hmmm - I would have thought that the clear dateline of May 2007 was a giveaway that this is an old article. At the time, Sunrocket WAS a clear alternative and their subsequent closure is just a sign of how competitive a market this is.

Posted by: Owen, 17:33:22 on 2007-10-08

um - anyone read the news lately!!! For you guys to call yourselves VoIP News and not update this funny. Consumers need answers -- and you guys are missing the boat. Sunrocket is dead and Vonage on lifesupport. Again, as far as editorial objectivity - how come Net2Phone is not listed. I have them and love 'em. It is huge, well funded and at it for 10+ years. What a shame -- when the industry needs you most to provide "um" - news -- you are asleep at the wheel :(

Posted by: rachel, 18:12:24 on 2007-10-07

It seems this is an old article. SunRocket isn't even in business anymore. As for all voip companies being at risk for being sued that is not true. Packet 8 holds its own patents. I've also been with Packet 8 for two years with no interruption in service. I also like that their customer service isn't outsourced and stays in the good ole USA!

It seems that Net2Phone is the quient giant here. Has anyone used them???? My tech friends like them and they are running a promo now with great prices -- but they seem to be under the radar. Anyone know why?

VoIP services really rely on the cust's internet connection. so VoIP satisfaction will really rely on their internet connection. i find vonage great.

Lightyear Alliance also has a product called Virtual VOIP where you don't need broadband connection but still make international calls using VOIP. Check out my myspace page...search birdie109.

I've used vonage for 2 yrs. Some people seem to hate it but its been great for me. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I was one of Sunrocket customer who had to go to another company for voip service. I choose VOIP.com; I have been with them for about a month. I am cancelling it and going with Comcast. My experience with VOIP was just a nightmare. Could you believe it that their service did not work properly even for one single day. I tried many times to get with their support over the phone with no success. In my whole life I have not seen any such a bad service like I saw with VOIP.com. Please be aware of that and if you would like more specific I am willing to share. Thanks

I am looking because Vonage's service is dreadful.

Posted by: paul, 08:31:35 on 2007-07-29

I have been on Lightyear Alliance for six months now and the service/quality have been GREAT! And no worries about patent issues. Lightyear owns their technology! I love it!

Posted by: Tom Bach, 02:53:25 on 2007-05-29

I have been using Lightyear Alliance as my VOIP provider and I have never seen them mentioned in any of your reports

How can you write this article without pointing out that any of these VoIP suppliers are just at risk from lawsuits as Vonage? Verizon chose Vonage for business reasons, any VoIP supplier would be as suitable on a technical basis.

Posted by: Dave Beck, 09:45:46 on 2007-05-18

This may be a good list for residential VoIP but it is a terrible list for Business VoIP. Companies want Hosted PBX solutions, "find me, follow me", call screening, and many other advanced features. Packet 8 requires a contract and forces you to buy their equiment. Plus they just raised their rates. I would look at companies like Aptela and Vocalocity, (though they seem to be a copycat of Aptela, with less features, selling only on slight price differences). Find a real business solution with a boatload of features.

what a bunch of crap. try to compute it and vonage will still end up the cheapest VOIP. watch out for hidden fees out there!hehehe vonage will disclose all the fees. and customer service is excellent even though outsourced from philippines. they have excellent accent.
