I've had Lingo for years now; been a very reliable service, except for their London virtual number which never worked well. Signed up with Vonage, ran their service in parallel with Lingo. Vonage had problems: you would dial a number and it wouldn't ring... and calls would come in straight to voicemail. I will get around to cancelling them eventually.

Posted by: Mark, 08:32:03 on 2008-07-03

I use Lingo, and although I have had some disruptions, here and there, especially after an electric storm, I am not complaining. Compared to what I was paying for less service, it is excellent.

Posted by: anonymous, 05:03:57 on 2008-06-14

Yes I gotta love Vonage. Very cheap and all the cool features are free. Also good tech support.

Posted by: Lorie, 05:14:01 on 2008-04-30

I tried cancelling Vonage after 6 mos and they tried to offer me all kinds of deals to stay. Even after switching to comcast I still received Von bills and they said Only I can cancel my account but it would cost $30 and my account would be overdrawn so I told them to postpone it til I called them to cancel. I called Comcast and they called Vonage and they canceled my account immediately. Then I got a Vonage bill for $130 taken from my band for a modem I was not allowed to return. When I told the supervisor only I can cancel my account, he said the other supervisor was wrong and he would review my case and call me in 5 days. After no phone call, I went to arbitration, which promised to assign a person to help me shortly and my dispute will be resolved in 30 days. Nobody was assigned to me and 30 days later I have heard nothing and my account has still been charged $130, Vonage totally sucks.

I have had vonage since April of 2005. I have to say that I have had very little trouble with their actual service that they provide. I have had an occasion when I have had to call customer service and that seems to be a joke; however I have had maybe 1 or 2 outages since joining them. I have notice this year that I have had sound quality issues that I never had before. I have 8mb/sec intenet speed, so I know its not my internet speed. I am not sure if the poor quality is becuase of their current situation, but if it doesn't improve soon I will probably leave within the next month or so. I would caution anyone with a TIVO series 2/3 or a security system. They are somtimes not compatiable with all VOIP and you should make sure that the VOIP provider has a high enough packet size to carry the signals. I tried packet 8; however their service packets were to small and could not carry my security system signals to the alarm company. Comcast and Mediacom are not much better, but you must think of these things before making any mores from traditional phone service to VOIP.

Vonage and good customer service? I spend 5 hours on and off the phone with them JUST to change out a bad phone for a Vonage/Linksys router. The language barrior was dismal at best. I'm with Vonage because I'm with Vonage, not because I like them.

I've used Vonage for a year and the only thing I can say is that their service is awful. Dropped and not clear calls. All problems disappeared when I switched to UNIATELECOM. Great customer service, clear calls. It is a new company with A++ customer service. My Office benefited from dropping Vonage, so should anyone of you, check them out at http://www.uniatelecom.com

went to the Unia Telecom site. good Connecticut VOIP phone service provider. Great alternative to Vonage or SunRocket! Apparently, they have a cap on subscribers they're willing to service. According to the CSR I spoke with, no more than 5K users at any given time. Said they want to ensure preservation of quality service delivery by not having too many subscribers. Surely makes sense. Definitely signing up now...... G.

I have had voip.com service for several months now. I have had a few small issues with the service, but when I called 1800TRYVOIP for technical support, the problem was resolved quickly and there was no problem getting through to a person. Sometimes people have different experiences with different service providers. Sometimes it might just be bad timing. I would strongly recommend voip.com. They have great service and lower rates than any other compnay I have seen so far. My yearly plan comes to about 16.95 per month for unlimited calls.

About Voip.com... This was a decent company about 6 months ago but has been going downhill ever since. Customer service has been poor and they don't honor their rebates nor refunds. I've missed many calls because they get the message "this number not working." I have cable internet and had no problems when I had SunRocket (which I loved). Anyway, I wouldn't recommend them and there are other, better, voip providers you haven't listed. Why not?

Ive had Voice Eclipse for about 2 years. The price is good--24.00 a month for 2 lines. The service was good except I never liked the sound quality--(everyone else told me it was fine) BUT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE WORST. IVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY PHONE FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS NOW AND CANNOT GET TO TALK TO ANYONE. THEY KEEP U ON HOLD FOR 20 MIN THEN TELL YOU TO LEAVE A MESSAGE AND THEY NEVER CALL. I EVEN E-MAILED THE VP OF TECHNICAL DEPT AND STILL NO RESPONSE---THAT IS WHY I AM LOOKING FOR A NEW CO. RIGHT NOW

Posted by: anonymous, 11:01:53 on 2007-11-03

I would like to make a comment on 2 of the providers. Packet 8 Customer service started out pretty good but has gone down hill. They lie, and do not assist you. If you open a case it takes a month or more for them to respond. It takes 30 minutes or more to talk to someone and sometimes you still never do. VONAGE, I am currently trying to change from Packet 8 to Vonage, come to find out, there is no way to email vonage, They also lie and tell you they will call you back and don't. 2 DAY shipping to them takes 4 days yet you pay the price... AND, they are working with call centers in INDIA. So it seems so far they all suck, and are the same.. Any suggestions? Maybe we should start a site like the Comcast must die sight.

Hmmm - I would have thought that the clear dateline of May 2007 was a giveaway that this is an old article. At the time, Sunrocket WAS a clear alternative and their subsequent closure is just a sign of how competitive a market this is.

Posted by: Owen, 17:33:22 on 2007-10-08

um - anyone read the news lately!!! For you guys to call yourselves VoIP News and not update this funny. Consumers need answers -- and you guys are missing the boat. Sunrocket is dead and Vonage on lifesupport. Again, as far as editorial objectivity - how come Net2Phone is not listed. I have them and love 'em. It is huge, well funded and at it for 10+ years. What a shame -- when the industry needs you most to provide "um" - news -- you are asleep at the wheel :(

Posted by: rachel, 18:12:24 on 2007-10-07

It seems this is an old article. SunRocket isn't even in business anymore. As for all voip companies being at risk for being sued that is not true. Packet 8 holds its own patents. I've also been with Packet 8 for two years with no interruption in service. I also like that their customer service isn't outsourced and stays in the good ole USA!

Posted by: Erin, 17:20:00 on 2007-10-04

It seems that Net2Phone is the quient giant here. Has anyone used them???? My tech friends like them and they are running a promo now with great prices -- but they seem to be under the radar. Anyone know why?

I was one of Sunrocket customer who had to go to another company for voip service. I choose VOIP.com; I have been with them for about a month. I am cancelling it and going with Comcast. My experience with VOIP was just a nightmare. Could you believe it that their service did not work properly even for one single day. I tried many times to get with their support over the phone with no success. In my whole life I have not seen any such a bad service like I saw with VOIP.com. Please be aware of that and if you would like more specific I am willing to share. Thanks

How can you write this article without pointing out that any of these VoIP suppliers are just at risk from lawsuits as Vonage? Verizon chose Vonage for business reasons, any VoIP supplier would be as suitable on a technical basis.

Posted by: Dave Beck, 09:45:46 on 2007-05-18

This may be a good list for residential VoIP but it is a terrible list for Business VoIP. Companies want Hosted PBX solutions, "find me, follow me", call screening, and many other advanced features. Packet 8 requires a contract and forces you to buy their equiment. Plus they just raised their rates. I would look at companies like Aptela and Vocalocity, (though they seem to be a copycat of Aptela, with less features, selling only on slight price differences). Find a real business solution with a boatload of features.

Posted by: Earl Vega, 18:46:50 on 2007-05-17

what a bunch of crap. try to compute it and vonage will still end up the cheapest VOIP. watch out for hidden fees out there!hehehe vonage will disclose all the fees. and customer service is excellent even though outsourced from philippines. they have excellent accent.

Taking Precautions Against a Vonage Collapse

Romanii Au Talent Oficial Site

Finding a backup VoIP provider will take due diligence by consumers, small businesses.

The best advice for Vonage customers this week is not to panic. After all, the judge in Friday's hearing on the injunction resulting from Verizon's successful patent infringement suit didn't say the VoIP pioneer couldn't keep serving its customers, he just said it couldn't acquire any new ones. And an appeals court quickly put even that ruling on temporary hold. Still, it would be foolish not to plan against the possibility that Vonage might have to stop operating completely. That would be like going for a Sunday drive without a spare tire in the trunk.

Residential users have several alternatives in case they lose Vonage service. For one, they could go with VoIP service from cable providers or even their friendly neighborhood telcos. The problem is, notes In-Stat analyst David Lemelin, that many consumers choose services such as Vonage's specifically because they don't want to depend on large companies they're not necessarily fond of for 100 percent of their communications needs. On the other hand, if they sign up with another independent VoIP provider similar to Vonage, they'll have to keep in mind the possibility that the patent issues involved reach so deep into the industry that they could jeopardize virtually every Internet telephony provider.

Whatever type of provider they choose, they will have a number of issues to deal with that they wouldn't have if they stuck with conventional phone service. The issues vary with the type, size and even location of the operator. Cable VoIP providers, for example, at times tend to act like conventional phone companies. They are solid and reliable, but typically don't emphasize or even offer features such as virtual phone numbers. Located in distant cities or even overseas, such numbers allow friends and relatives in London, for example, to call U.S. subscribers for the cost of a local call.

At least the cable companies are trying to sell their IP telephony service. Conventional phone companies, by contrast, often offer their own VoIP services, but may do little to sell them because they compete with traditional wireline voice offerings.

Transferring to another independent VoIP provider will raise further issues besides the possibility of another shutdown. At the very least, users will have to once again ask some basic questions they had hoped they were done with. For one thing, even though VoIP can work anywhere there is a broadband Internet connection, not all providers have E911 service everywhere their potential customers might live, and they're not supposed to offer service where they don't. They may also not have virtual numbers where their users want them, particularly in Europe. Also, their international calling rates on some routes may be little cheaper than conventional overseas dialing. Vonage users will have to check all such factors before selecting a new operator.

Small businesses using Vonage services, such as its $49.99 per month unlimited calling plan with free two-line phone adapter, have even fewer options. Not being in residential areas will typically prevent them from having access to cable VoIP services, for example. That means the lawsuit could turn into an unexpected opportunity for Skype, which has been making big noises about its services for businesses . That should delight Verizon.

Vonage Soldiers On After Appeal Victory

Romanii Au Talent Oficial Site

Court ruling frees VoIP provider to continue signing up customers during appeals process.

Suddenly time is back on Vonage's side. Only yesterday, people were talking about how to find an alternative phone service in case an appeals court ruling today put the VoIP provider on a rapid road to bankruptcy. Today, the court cleared Vonage to continue business as usual while it appeals the patent infringement verdict Verizon won against it March 8. That could take a year or more, given that all Vonage has done so far is file a notice of appeal. In short, it's free to keep fighting the odds for quite a while longer.

A loss today would have crippled Vonage. The judge in the case originally had imposed a $58 million fine, as 5.5 percent royalties on revenues, following the verdict that found Vonage guilty of infringing three of Verizon's VoIP patents. The judge subsequently ordered Vonage to stop acquiring new customers, though he allowed it to continue serving existing ones. That amounted to a compromise, given that the alternative was to order the VoIP operator to shut down completely. Still, it would have strangled Vonage, given the pace at which it tends to lose customers.

The appeals court immediately stayed that ruling until today, when it made the stay permanent. That lets Vonage continue to do business as usual, which means to keep trying to outrun some scary numbers. For example, it will be able to continue spending what most observers consider too much money for each new customer it acquires, which is one reason it blew through significant private investments not long before its May 2006 IPO. It will also be able to keep dealing with a reported customer turnover rate of 2.5 percent a month. At its current customer base of 2.4 million, that number means it has to find some 2,000 new users a day just to break even.

It will similarly be able to continue coping with a slowing growth rate that by some accounts will soon see it overtaken for the first time by a cable VoIP provider, Comcast, with all the disadvantages in terms of marketing muscle that implies. And it will be free to deal with its plunging stock price, which has dropped dramatically from its $17 opening level. This last, at least, has gotten temporarily easier, as shares shot up as much as 53 percent, to nearly $4.50, following today's ruling.

In short, the ruling means Vonage will be free to battle back against some pretty strong odds for quite a while longer. The reprieve might even be permanent. Vonage believes the message of today's ruling is clear: that the appeals court thinks there's a significant chance the carrier will be able to prove it didn't infringe any patents. If it can, then all it will have to do is prove that its business model works.

Other VoIP Providers Eager to Fill In for Vonage

Romanii Au Talent Oficial Site

If you're worried about losing your phone service, there are plenty of alternatives.

If you're a Vonage customer, you're probably worried right now. Originally you may have chosen Vonage because it was the largest independent VoIP operator, which should also have made it the most stable. But its very size made it a fat target for Verizon's patent infringement suit. Now it could conceivably be out of business in a few days, and you could be stuck without phone service.

Fortunately, there are plenty of other independent VoIP providers ready to come to your rescue. They're already offering special deals to get your business, and they also want to tell you why they think their service is better than Vonage's anyway. Here's a sprinkling of what's available:

Packet8 is waiving its $29.95 activation fee for customers switching from Vonage. It currently offers the first month's service free for all new customers, with adapter equipment to connect your standard phone to the Internet at no additional cost. But even if you weren't in danger of losing your Vonage service, Packet8 still thinks you should give them a try, particularly if you're a small business.

That's because Packet8 says the hosted IP PBX services they offer compare with those offered by sophisticated enterprise IP telephony systems. Huw Rees, VP of Marketing at Packet 8, says that Packet8's impressive technological foundation, illustrated by some 67 patents granted to parent company 8x8, should give it a strong position if Verizon decides to extend its patent litigation to a larger circle of VoIP providers.

Packet8 has seen a slight increase in queries from Vonage customers looking for a change in service. Because of its strong business offering, more defections are coming on the business side than on the consumer side, says Rees.

Like Packet8, InPhonex will waive activation fees for Vonage refugees. But unlike Packet8, InPhonex normally charges customers for the adapters used to connect their standard phones to the Internet. Still, they make an exception for Vonage customers, offering the option to trade in their equipment for credit towards an InPhonex adapter.

The advantages of InPhonex mainly involve its international reach, according to Chief Marketing Officer Todd Hirshorn. It does business in 150 countries, and lets customers take advantage of that fact. If you're one of them, it will provide you, at no extra charge, with 5 or more virtual phone numbers that friends or relatives overseas or across the country can dial to talk to you for the price of a local call.

Vonage's woes have been good for InPhonex's business too.

"We get called everyday by people saying they have a VoIP device they got at their local electronics store, and that tells us immediately it's probably a Vonage device," says Hirshorn. "We've been hearing more from Vonage customers in the recent past, especially since just before the injunction that told [Vonage] not to accept new customers."

Lingo, like everyone, is also offering Vonage customers free activation and equipment shipping, which normally run $40. This comes on top of its popular promotion providing a choice of one month of free service, or 6 months at a reduced rate of $17.95, after which it rises to $21.95. Lingo claims their cost is far more reasonable than Vonage.

"Lingo has always been a lower priced alternative," says Marketing Director Jason Stricker. "We offer all the same features at a lower price, and often with better call quality." Lingo also includes calls to more places overseas in its basic monthly plan, says Stricker, including the U.S., Canada and 21 other countries.

Like InPhonex, Lingo has also seen a rise in new consumer prospects, thanks to Vonage.

"Everyone heard about the Vonage ruling a week or 2 ago," says Stricker. "We decided to actively go after these customers, and put together the best plan we could. The response rate is very high, and calls into sales lines have increased tremendously."

SunRocket, another leading competitor, is making no special offers to Vonage customers, feeling that its $199 annual plan is value enough. It has, however, noticed a significant increase in queries and subscriptions from Vonage users, according to corporate communications VP Jeremy James. Upticks were particularly noticeable after the initial court judgment found Vonage guilty of three infringement counts, and after the injunction (stayed by an appeals court almost immediately) that said it couldn't sign up new customers.

There are plenty of other independent VoIP operators willing to take on Vonage customers. To find one in your area, this page is a good starting point. If you choose one, your main concern should be to make sure your new provider offers E911 service where you live. Otherwise, you may survive Vonage's next court date unscathed, but won't do as well when you trip getting out of bed the next morning.

Is Vonage Toast?

I don't beleive what some of you are writing. You must work for the big phone companies and can't switch. I have been with Vonage for over 3 years. I have saved a ton of money, and had virtually little problems. The savings out weighed the problems over and over again. All big phone companies would love to have the Vonage piece of the pie and get deeper into our wallets. My phone bill before I left Sprint was $80 a month before long distance charges, then .25 cents a minute, which ran into the hundred dollar range monthly. We had to limit who we called each month and for how long we talked, remember the egg timers? It is very nice to now call my family across the country any time and talk as long as I want. The only problems I have had with Vonage were from my ISP provider, Cox cable, HMMM, they have VoIP now also, but for much higher programs. Old lines that were never up graded to handle the increasing load and speed of the internet. I have to reboot my cable modem from time to time, and this got my phone back online, I could also brouse the internet again. GO VONAGE!

the problem with vonage is that you can't use your internet everytime you make a call , if you do, you gonna hear the other with a lot of interference. test it yourself. I fixed this problem with ACN

Gang, I just started using Vonage in Feb., and must admit, Sales was AWESOME except for one small detail..... The sales rep told me my number was transferable even though their web site indicated otherwise. So after I got the equipment installed, and a phone hooked up to it, I called and asked to have the number transferred. They told me it would not be transferrable for a couple of months. :( And yes, their support is sketchy. 3 TIMES in one night, working with their LVL 2 tech support trying to get a polycom IP phone to work, they would simply hang up on me when they ran out of answers. :( And yes, I am stuck with them or I pay a rediculous amount of money for early term. :(

QUOTE FROM Arnold: "I can't believe some people can write so much garbage! Make no mistake: Verizon is after the ENTIRE VoIP industry. Take Vonage donw first, the rest will follow. And this is all bad for consumers. I've been using Vonage for almost 3 years, daily, without a problem. Result: thousands of dollars in savings. I'm sure Verizon (my former phone company) is thrilled with my savings..." How dare you!

Call 35 Countries for $24.95/month ($30 after taxes and fees)with Broadvoice!!!I've had VOIP now for 4 and 1/2 years. I wouldn't ever go back to Verizon, Ever... I've tried Vonage, 8 x 8, and finally Broadvoice. They are all awesome, but Broadvoice is by far the best one. I only pay $24.95 a month ($30/Month after fees and taxes). Broadvoice is the best, because you can call 35 Countries. They say unlimitted, but in reality you can only call about 3000 minutes international before they get upset and charge you 3.9 cents per minute over 3000 international minutes. My wife would use between 3000-4000 minutes a month calls in the US, and never had a problem. Really, the only time Broadvoice had a problem was when I called Brazil 3,900 minutes in one month. I guess they felt a little taken advantage of. With Verizon... That would've cost me at least $800.00. I guess $30 towards Broadvoice isn't so bad. www.broadvoice.com

I recently became a vonage user about 2 1/2 months ago. I have nothing bad to say about service. It works perfectly every single day. My wife calls London from Los Angeles every other day and it costs basically nothing (unlimited plan). We call all over the central U.S. and have had no problems nor hidden costs.

I had Vonage..and it was like dealing with the mob. First I bought the equipment...the service NEVER worked..I couldn't hear people or they could't hear them...miserable...in some slight of hand when I tried to cancell after 1 week they came up with some obscure notation that you have signed up for a year..and it will cost you $300.00 to discontinue. I had it for a miserable year...and notified them via email I had now been with them an entire year and had gotten REAL phone service...they said NO..you have to call a certain number...after waiting a whole hour, they did not answer...I threatened the law via email and they aknowledged my cancellation..however...every month now for the past 2 months they withdraw money from my account and I have to call the one hour number to get my money back. THese people are unbelievable and I cannot believe they are allowed to do business here. I say stay away from them...they are unbelievble crooks. Anymore so many companies are involved in some really sleezy business practices...it's a full time job trying to keep from being ripped off.

I can't believe some people can write so much garbage! Make no mistake: Verizon is after the ENTIRE VoIP industry. Take Vonage donw first, the rest will follow. And this is all bad for consumers. I've been using Vonage for almost 3 years, daily, without a problem. Result: thousands of dollars in savings. I'm sure Verizon (my former phone company) is thrilled with my savings...

Vonage customer service is a joke. They so not speek english and put you on eternal hold if they can not answer your questions. They will not give information as to speak to on a 'higher level'. They are the worst company to deal with ever!!

So, the 200 dlls I paid in cancellation fees didn't help Vonage?...and so the other millions people will pay? that's too bad.

By the way, when you call Vonage ask them about thier hitched cancellation policy. Even if you have problems with the service they are very unforgiving! Garbage companies like this deserve to go under. BYE BYE Vonage! LOL

Vonage is complete garbage. If you ever plan on using the internet and the phone at the same time forget it with Vonage. The calls continuously drop, especially when it matters the most. If this is a business that requires both internet and phone I highly disregard Vonage. Cutomer service at Vonage is a nightmare! If you need proof call the 800 number and request customer service for exsisting customers. After that call back and request new service and you tell me what you see as the major difference (they only care about money, not service), where Vonage has thier highest priority. That is all. I challenge anyone that disagrees with this to provide proof as I have.

Vonage is great and god knows who this A.C.N rubbish is about but Vonage have done well to become a large market share company and does not deserve to be put under such scrutiny like they have been. THere are loads of voip providers out there, this is totally bang out of order.. typical of the USA.

Subscribers beware! All I know is that, I signed up for Vonage service and everything was great until 3 weeks later when the service stopped working. I called in to customer service and tech support and they did some troubleshooting with me until they decided that it would not be fixable. They told me to "BORRROW a friends laptop..." I never was able to find anyone to borrow one from to continue the troubleshooting with them. I finally just gave up on their service. They made some promise that they failed to keep. Needless to say I did not realize that you agree to a year contract with them when you sign up. :O YIKES! Also you give them free reign to charge your CREDIT CARD! :O YIKES! I tried to alert them of the problem with their customer service and they told me that I owed roughly $100 for cancelling my service. I asked them if they felt it was right to be charging for service they were not providing and they stated that I did not follow through with their recomendations. It is a little disheartening to know that our government allows businesses to treat consumers like this. To charge for services and not provide them should be illegal. daneK
